Joo Sae-Hyuk chop depth

Strategy

Hi coach,

I was watching this video of Vladimir Samsonov against Joo Sae-Hyuk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FarDsjks94)
Something that really stood out to me was that Joo seems to keep a very large portion of his long pimple chops deliberately short behind the net. Quite often they land before going halfway over Samsonov's side of the table. Everyone I've asked agrees that a default, quality chop is as deep and low as possible, as to reduce the extreme angles the attacker can make and force them to put more energy into lifting the ball.

What Joo is doing here seems to go against that consensus, do you have any idea what the cause or the reason could be? Is it a strategical decision only relevant to this match-up? Because I've seen other matches where Joo places most of his long pimple chops deep on the table unless he's under heavy pressure.

Hi Arjan,

I don't think he is doing that deliberately.  I think he is a little past his prime and sometimes the ball is just falling shorter on the table.

Gerada v Lu

Once again Alois and Jeff discuss a great match from the PingSkills Classic. This is the first quarter final between the number 1 seed Simon Gerada and Percy Lu. Without giving too much away, just make sure you watch the incredible backhand that Percy Lu hits in the 4th set. It really is the shot of the tournament.
