Hi PingSkills,

I am 11 years old and I am not as tall as other players and not as flexible therefore some people does a fast, low and a little topspin towards the far right or far left. The shots always end up near the net, on the left or right side of the table making it hard to return it. most times i fail, but when i return it, it mostly goes very high, and i will lost the point. Can you tell me where to stand and what kind of return should i give? ( Topspin? Block? Push? )

Hi Stefan,

Yes, I remember that prblem well.  I was very short till I was 14 anfd palyers used to try this tactic on me a lot.

I think the best advice is to watch the ball carefully when they are serving.  This will give you a little more time to reach that short ball.  If the ball haas topspin it would be best to flick or block the ball back.  If the ball is long on your side you can even topspin it back.  Think about placing the return well.  Because the ball is wide you can give it back to them wide as well.

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
