Strokes
Hi guys,
I am a big fan of watching Zhang Xielin play. He is my favourite player and I would like to know why there are just ˋˋShakehandˋˋ choppers. For example: Why aren’t people chopping with the Seemiller grip or other ones. In my opinion it is possible to chop with these grips but why canˋt they Resch the top level?
Hi Tim,
The Shakehand gives advantages for the chopper. I us being able to use different rubbers on both sides of the bat.
It also tends to give a better reach which is often important when defending away from the table.
There have been a few choppers with pen grip but not many.
Topspin-to-topspin rallies are fast, dynamic, and can be the key to winning more points! 🏓🔥 Learning how to control these exchanges will help you stay on the attack and put pressure on your opponent.
✅ How to adjust your technique for topspin rallies (compared to topspin vs. block)
✅ Why your stroke should be more forward and how to generate dip with topspin
✅ Tactical strategies – Mix up speed, spin, and placement for better control
✅ How to train this stroke effectively, even without a strong training partner

Tim,it is generally very difiicult to chop with backhand if you are using other than shakehand.
Zhang Xielin played many decades ago and the game then was very slow compared to later ages.
At that time, styles were very variable and true loopers were almost nonexistent.
Against today's powerloops,I think it is impossible to chop using penhold grip on the backhand at higher levels.
