Choosing backhand v pivot forehand

Strategy

Hi Alois,

When should I use my backhand to attack and when else should I pivot and attack with my forehand instead. Although with my forehand I can generate more speed I can at many times not pivot fast enough. I am equally good at my backhand and my forehand.

Thanks,

Chandrachur

Hi Chandrachur,

If your forehand is faster than your backhand then there will be times you will want to pivot.  It would only be for the finishing shot when you have enough time.  Time is the biggest factor here.  If you don't have time to get around and play the forehand then use your backhand especially since you feel it is as good as your forehand.

There is not one answer here it is a matter of judging each ball and the time you have available and the speed you want to play.

Tactical Planning

Spin, speed and placement are the 3 things you need to focus on when coming up with your tactics against each of your opponents. Start with the serve and your third ball attack. Figure out what type of serve your opponent finds most difficult. Find out where is the best place to direct your first attack. Is your opponent better at blocking with their backhand or forehand? Does your opponent prefer a faster topspin or a slow spinny topspin? Do the same for your returns.
