Changing to Penhold

Strokes

Hi Alois;

Recently I was messing about with a friend and had a go playing penhold and found my shots were stronger and more consistent than shakehand; even to my surprise my backhand. I am 16, so I can still improve so should I make the change?

Hi Sam,

Give it a try.  You can experiment with it for a month and then see.  Sometimes when we change something like the grip we play with less expectations and more freedom so things may seem to go well.  It is important to test this over a slightly longer period of tie to see if it is really better.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.

Hi Alois!

What is the right rubber for quick penhold attacker like me? Should I use SHORT PIMPLED RUBBER or PIPS-IN RUBBER?

Thanks!

Hi Louie,

You can use either.  If you like to hit the ball flat and fast then the short pips could be OK.  If you want to generate spin then the pips in is better.  Not many top penhold players use short pimples now.
