Strokes
Hi,
I am wondering if breathing is a factor when you do a stroke like fast topspin or smash?
Last time when I practiced by myself, it looks like a good way to exhale when I do a strong forehand stroke. You can this compare with the tennisplayers who exhale by doing a strong stroke against their opponents - some with a big sound! - like Monica Seles used to do). If the defender got slow balls back and doesn´t block, you have time to exhale when you make the fast stroke. I think, actually it gives your stroke more power.
What do you thing about this? Is this applikable in a match? Or should it be normal to exhale while you are smashing? I did not find anything about breathing in your website - may be I missed it.
Tanks for your answer as usual,
Tom
Hi Tom,
Breathe naturally while playing. If you find the need to grunt you are probably exerting too much energy and have tension in your body. If you see the top players they can exert a lot of speed without the use of the grunt.
If you start thinking too much about your breathing you could get too caught up with the minor details.
The banana flick has become one of the most important returns in table tennis. It allows you to attack almost any short ball and places your opponent under immediate pressure. Still it is a difficult stroke that takes a lot of practice to master.
