Hi Pingskills! I am 18 years old and play with normal rubber on forehand and short pimples on backhand.

I have played Table tennis for about 4 years and 6 months ago my coach said that i should try short pimples on my backhand, i have become a much better player thanks to it but for some reason i cant block with it very good when doing drills.

Do you have any suggestions of how i should block?

Hi Fredrik,

You need to hit the ball very flat with the short pimples.  You also need to be more accurate because of this.  Hit sharply with it keeping the ball on the rubber for a short amount of time.  Take the ball at the highest point.  This will also give you a better chance for getting the ball on the table.

Thanks for your answer. I play with people from the second highest leauge in sweden and they put so much speed in the ball that it makes it hard for me to block. In matches i can stand close to the table and push my opponent back, so i know the flat part of sp but when you say that i should take it on the highest point, how far from the table should i then stand from the table when blocking in drills?

Hi Fredrik,

I would stand half a step away from the table and try to gauge where the ball is at its highest.  This will change slightly with each ball but that is probably a good area to base yourself.
