hi coach....I have a question in my mind and hope other players can also learn from this.....
As I watch international games like Asians vs. Americans or Europeans I observed that players from Asia (Smaller in heights)usually play in front of the table or a step away only...that is opposite from Europeans and Americans (taller players)style of playing which is one or two steps away from the table...at first I thought that it is because of the heights of the players for their better position and foot working...but our coach before told me that Asians get their balls at the "early stage" and Americans or Europeans get their balls at the "Late stage"...this regards to the rotation of the ball...I don't know if your familiar with this coach but if yes, can you please explain to us further how its working and how it affect the % of a player returning back the ball to the other side of the table. thank you so much and more power...
Hi Felix,
The later you hit the ball the more time you have to see it and also the spin and speed will ease off.
However you are also giving your opponent more time. Each player has their comfortable position from where they play.
When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
