3rd and 5th ball backhand attack counter

My friend has a really nice and consistent serve and tends to get most winning points off me with his backhand flick/smash on the 3rd or 5th ball. Is there any strategic or technical way I can prevent or counter this?

Hi Jeffrey,

The first thing would be to try and get the ball to his forehand side.  Even if the return is a bit weaker to his forehand it may be more effective.  See how this works.

The other option is that if you are finding it difficult to keep it away from his backhand side, focus on making a deep and fast return to the backhand and then be ready for the next ball.  So in this way you are preparing early for what is going to happen which may give you a bit more time to react.
