It's a good vidéo, but I wondered: if I want to do my push very short, but with a strong Backspin, do I still use the same principles of the simple push? if no, is there some specificity of that stoke that i should know??

Hi Haja,

We will make a lesson on the short push.  The main thing is to have a very relaxed hand without too much forward momentum.  By brushing under the ball you will get the backspin.  The finer the contact the shorter it will go.

Hi Michael,

Yes thanks.  As Jeff is right handed and I am left handed one of us is doing each.  At that point I was explaining what I was doing.

I tried your technique but I meet difficulties on the height of  balls  often too high .

Can i do something ?

Hi Nicolas,

The height is determined by two things.  The angle of your bat and the contact of the ball.  If you close the angle the ball should go lower.  If you brush the ball more on contact then the ball should also go shorter.

Finally I master better this stroke.

The ball  was lower during my day training  ^^

At least it attack me less easily even if it is not perfect.

Thanks you again for this advices.

will you be doing any lessons on close range attacking eg, flicking, over the table loops/topspins, sidespin fast pushing etc.

Hi Jonathan,

We have a lesson on the Forehand Flick.  We have just done an Ask the Coach video response to a question about over the table topspins. This will be up in the next couple of weeks.

We will look into other types of returns such as the sidespin fast push.

also, can closing your racet but pushing harder, will it help getting it over?

also, can you please email me when the question video is made and when the sidespin fast push is on the site

thanks :)

If you close your racket and push through it will go on the table but isn't a very effective shot because it doesn't have any spin and not enough speed either to trouble your opponent.

Hi Alois, I'm wondering why would I push the ball when its long and deep? Why not just do a forehand against backspin stroke? (I can understand pushing it when it is "low and Short" but why a long ball that I would be able to attack on?)    Thanks in advance :D

You are right Collin.  Ideally you want to be attacking that long ball with a topspin.  The only reason you would play another push is if you are in a bad position or your opponent doesn't particularly like playing agains a backspin ball.

Hello Alois,

I have been using the push (back & forehand) stroke a lot but wondering if there is a way to get sidespin on a defensive push type stroke. If you could help me out I would appreciate it greatly.

Thank,

Nate

Hi Nate,

To get sidespin on the push you can brush across the ball during your stroke.  However this is not something I would recommend as your basic stroke.  This will mean that the ball doesn't do as directly where you want it to and you will make more errors with the stroke as well.  As an advanced stroke and on rare occasions this could be an alternative.

Hi Nate,

We have optimised the site so it will work well using your phone's browser. You should be able to watch all the videos on an iPhone and use the Vault.

Hi Alois, it just like a mini chop or open the bat and counterhit?
