Hi,

Is Ma Long participating in the London olympics? I found that Xu Xin and Ma Lin are also not in those olympic games.

Hi Nasko,

Ma Long is in the Teams event only.  He did not qualify for the singles.  It is a shame that a player of that level can't play in the singles.  Each country can only have a maximum of 2 players in the singles.

Take a look at PingPod #31 – Chinese Domination.

Yeah it is pretty tough isn't it.  Because there is a maximum of 2 Chinese the others were ahead of him at the time of qualification.

ITTF changed these rules. Unlike today, the Beijing Olympics had all three medals swept by China. ITTF minimizes 3 spots for singles to 2 spots because they are determined under WTTC. Zhang Jike, who became the world champion is top seed. Wang Hao who was runner up is second top seed. People who came in 3rd such as Timo Boll still competes in singles because he is Europe and Germany's top seed and he is not of China. Ma Long who was also third, ended up in team events only because he was beaten by Wang Hao for the final spot. Ma Long is only on Team Events but he must be lucky to still come in the olympics, because if he did not pass in the Asian Olympic Qualification, then only 2 players could go. Xu Xin on the other hand is only a P Card, because he is the 4th  best player in China. Being a P Card means you can play but only at a lesser chance, because a P Card's role is to substitute a player if he/she is injured. 2008's P Card was Chen Qi, but his chance became useless.

What would happen if Ma Long qualified for the olympics? Would he play in the singles?

Only two can play in the singles.  A third player can play only in the Teams event.

He is NUmber 2 at the moment.  Zhang Jike is currently number 1.  China occupy the top 5 Mens ranking spots.  They also occupy the top 4 Womens spots.

How did you say that Z.J is no. 1 Alois? Isn't the ranking decided by the ITTF world ranking list? Ma Long ranks first in that list. If you are taking the fact into consideration that Z.J beat M.L in kuwait open, well, he was also beaten by Xu Xin in korea open. Also, i'd like to know which 2 players you would like to see in the upcoming olympics.

Hi Nagaraj,

This was an old question from back in 2012. At that time Zhang Jike was number 1. Ma Long certainly is number 1 leading up to the Rio Olympics!
