Good afternoon Mr. Alois. I have trouble keeping the distance when i playing with top-ranked friend. he can topspin near the net with much effect and when I identify my defensive reflex for his offensive movements is going backwards away leaving me unable  to answer the ball. I am aware of the problem and sometimes achievement staying on the table to smash  the ball.what I can do to force myself to play closer to the table? thank you very much

Hi Carlos,

You need some sort of feedback of when you are moving backwards.

You can put a line on the floor and make sure you are not going back over that line.  Some players use a barrier behind them.  You need to be very careful if you do that to not trip over the barrier.

If you're going for the wall option, try to cover it with a floor mat or something. It can be quite dangerous if you're closer to it than you think and you swing your arm backwards hard for a big topspin (as can been seen on Martinand's picture).

I have an experience with that -_-
When I started to play some "real" table tennis (when I started to use some spin in the game),I always had the tendency to rush off the table right after my serve/receive,so my coach kept putting a barrier behind me -_-
I hate him for this.
