I am really bad with my hands, however, I am a great guitar player. I am able to glue the rubber correctly to the blade, but I am having nightmares getting a clean cut. I've seen people cut the sponge with the first motion and then the sheet with the second pass. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I don't know what knife I should use: sharp scissors (which I've already tried) or a cutter, a razor blade or an exacto knife. I am stuck.

Hi Daniel,

I prefer to use a cutter blade.  Make sure your cutter is sharp.  This really helps.

Then put an even pressure on the blade as you go around the bat.  It is good to go around and get a feel for it by cutting through the sponge first.  If your blade is really sharp it will go through both the sponge and the rubber at the same time.

I find it harder to get a clean cut with a pair of scissors but some people prefer them.

You can use a blade that you use for opening boxes.  We call it a Stanley knife but other countries may have different names.  Someone may be able to help you.

I do it with ordinary blade which is commonly used for shaving.

These are cheap, easily available and give you a clean cut as I always us a new one for cutting a single sheet of rubber.

Hey Alois,

Here in the US of A we call your Stanley Knife a utility blade and or Box Cutter. One thing for sure if someone is going to use one of these blades. Make sure you use it with a handle. Or else... Well you know what can happen if you use something sharp without the proper equipment/ handle.

So if you are going to use a Stanley Knife/ Utlilty Blade and or Box Cutter to cut/ trim your rubber's. Please be very careful.

Yes, with an ordinary shaving blade, you should be very careful to avoid a bloody ending.

However, the same works very well.

I am very happy with using a scalpel - it´s sharper than a cutter blade, safer to use than a shaving blade and very cheap - you can get a scalpel with 100 blades for 10 € - which should be more than sufficient for a whole life of playing table tennis :-). For a best result it is good to use a new blade for every pair of rubbers.
