Hi Judah,

Thanks for the question.  Firstly, just to get the terminology correct a match that is a best of 7 games means one player needs to win 4 games to win and a best of 5 games means they have to win 3 games.

The rules say a match can be any number of uneven games so you can have 1, 3, 5 etc.

They use best of 5 and 7 mainly in bigger competitions. There is no set rule though.  It depends on the importance of the competition and the amount of time and tables available.

So, if you only have a short amount of time and tables you can just do best of 1 game, or if there is a lot of time and tables then use best of 7 games.

Well Alois, I think a 7-gamed match is usually on singles tournaments because there simply is one match. When you play with a team you have to play 3v3 and one double, which means 10 matches, which would be too much time with 7gamed matches. I think this is the reason and the amount of tables don't really matter.

The number of tables can also be a factor. If you are running a tournament for 60 people and you only have 2 tables then you probably can't play best of 7. So in that sense it does come down to the time you have and the number of tables you have.
