The Forehand Chop is used to defend against an attacking topspin stroke. The main idea is to generate varying amounts of backspin to make it hard for the attacker. The backspin will cause the ball to drag down off your opponents racket meaning they will have to work hard to lift the ball if they want to play an attacking stroke.

The Forehand Chop in Table Tennis

The Forehand Chop is a defensive stroke. By varying the amount of backspin, you increase the difficulty for your opponent as they need to be able to pick the amount of spin on the ball or else risk either hitting the ball into the net or forcing it long off the end of the table.

Tips On Playing The Forehand Chop

  1. Start with your bat at head level
  2. Finish the stroke with your bat around knee level
  3. Play the stroke from slightly side on
