I don't know the chemical that is responsible for making speed glue so effective. And with the new rule coming into effect after the Beijing Olympics which bans speed glue, you might be better off learning to live without it.

If you currently use speed glue and are worried about the ban, there are a couple of options worth keeping your eye on. Firstly there is a new breed of water based glues that the Table Tennis companies are now manufacturing and trying to improve so that it has a reasonable effect. Secondly, there is a new breed of hyper tension rubbers that do not need to be glued but are made to have a similar effect as to a normal rubber with speed glue.
