You Asked

i have a  problem of always putting too much topspin on my ball - forehand or bqckhand smashes.  i have the idea for hitting the ball flat for forehand or backhand flicks,  but i can't seem to hit the smashes flat to create the speed for these strokes.  perhaps you can help me in these most important shots.  friends i play with are able to hit these shots very flat and fast.

thanks for the opportunity to ask questions.

Hi Charlie,

You need to focus on only the contact of the bat on the ball to start with. Try not to focus too much on where the ball is going.  The ball may initially even be hitting the back wall but focus only on the conact and the sound it makes.  It should be a loud cracking sound.

Once you have got the contact correct, then you can start to think about getting the ball closer to the table.

Try starting with you bat up a little higher and have the bat comoing through facing the opponents side of the table rather than the floor.
