Hi Maxwell,

Thanks for your question. The most effective serve should not be judged by how advanced it is. It should be judged on how much trouble it causes for your opponent. That is why it is a good idea to develop variation in your service. This will allow you to try a range of different serves against your opponents and find which one they have the most trouble with. You will certainly find that one person will have a lot of difficulty with one type of serve and another may return that same serve really well.

So keep practicing your serves (it is arguably the most important shot in the game) and keep working on developing variation of spin, speed and placement.

In my experience (which is limited), I have found that against beginners, sidespin serves are effective. Against intermediate players, backspin serves are usually effective. Against advanced players, they'll usually know how to return any serve so you should do anything that's somewhat disguised and just focus more on what's coming back at you
