Hi Nick,

It is important not to hold the bat too tightly. You will lose some touch and feeling if you hold it extremely tight. You should be able to pull the bat out of your playing hand with your non playing hand. If you cannot then you are probably holding the bat too tightly. While holding the racket not too tight, I would like to know if there are any differences in holding the racket when we play a forehand / backhand stroke, (a) before hitting the ball, (b) at contact of the ball and (c) after hitting the ball?

I notice from the matches posted on youtube, most of the professional players released their thumb and indexed finger after hitting the ball. Is this a correct action to follow? Please advise.

It is best to have a very similar grip for both forehand and backhand. Otherwise you will not have time between stroke to change your grip.  Most players don't move their fingers too much between shots.  Hope this helps.
