Mixing bats & rubbers

When combining a bat with a rubber. Which has more effect on the overall performance the bat or the rubber?

For example, placing a control rubber on a speed bat, vs. a speed rubber on a control bat? How would those options be different?

Or to put another angle on it, if we must be budget conscious, would we be better off to try to get away with a nice bat with a cheaper rubber or vice versa?

Is suppose there could be two different answers there. :)

Hi Dion,

I think the rubber definitely has more effect.  You can play with a low standard bat with good rubbers but it is very difficult to play with a good standard bat with cheap rubbers.

So to answer your final question, if you are being budget conscious go for a cheaper bat and don't compromise on the rubbers.

The other thing to be conscious of is that the more expensive rubbers are not necessarily better for everyone.

Thanks for your question Dion.

OK, that makes sense.  Thanks.

What do you think about mixing speed paddles with control rubbers or vise versa?

These are all a matter of personal preference. Unfortunately experimenting can become an expensive hobby. See if you can use others bats and try them out. That is probably the best way to find something that you like. The options are endless so stick with some basics. I think the training is more important than spending too much time changing your equipment.
