Hi Alec,
The key is to watch the ball in flight and then make ssure you are moving into position before you attempt the stroke.
I find the common problem with smashing is that players don't move into position before they make the stroke. This is especially shown up when there is sidespin on the ball.
The sidespin on the ball won't have much effect when you actually contact the ball because the contact is so sharp and short.
