This is not an easy choice but you can't go too far wrong if you follow these principles.

For your first and maybe second bats go for a pre made bat. (One with the rubber already on).

After that you can go for a custom designed bat. Look at the Speed and Spin Ratings. Other than players who play regularly (more than twice a week) you should not go for the highest speed and spin rating bats. Always start with something that is conservative until you are very confident in your stroke technique. This will help you to develop good technique. If you play with something too fast too early you will develop bad habits.

Don't go for the most expensive bat you can afford. This may not be the bat that is suited to your game.

Go for trusted brands.
