Our Vast Game

You may be playing in your local league or competition or at your school or you may even play at a state level. The beauty of our sport is your potential to grow. No matter how good or bad you may think you are, there is always someone that you are aiming to beat and similarly someone that is aiming to beat you. It is never more evident than here at the World Championships with so many countries and abilities present.

Sitting here in this massive stadium the Moscow 1980 Olympic main indoor stadium, with all the countries and players surrounding you, you see the vastness of our sport. Every one of them a great player in their own country, someone who is looked up to and admired by the other players in the country. Players that are doing what so few get the chance to do, represent their country in a sport. Players from such varied backgrounds, different socio-economic conditions, different opportunities and difficulties. They al come together to match themselves against each other.

I had a chance to speak to Scott Houston, the ITTF’s Oceania development manager. He was commenting on his plans to involve some of the smaller countries and territories around Oceania in Table Tennis. With countries like Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Tuvalu already involved, the ITTF are still looking to make this game grow.
