Wang Liqin misses the cut
The upcoming World Team Championships will be played in Russia from May 23rd to 30th at the Moscow, Olympiyskiy Sports Complex.
When you think of World Championships one of the names that springs to mind immediately is Wang Liqin. However this World Championships will see him missing for the first time at World Championships since 1997.
In a cut throat selection, Ma Lin and Wang Liqin were forced to play off for the final place in the Chinese Mens team. What a way to decide a place in this prestigious team and probably a certain World Championships Gold Medal. Most of us would die for such a prize.
It builds on the Chinese selection policy of selecting players by selection competitions. The first four spots in the team had already been decided by selection tournaments. The fifth place was to be up to the coaches. However the coaches decided that the fairest way to decide between these two great champions would be a selection match.
What a great way to decide a place in a team. After all, the rules are all there in the ITTF rulebook. Why do we need to add our own for selection?
