Table Tennis Olympics

Table Tennis has been part of the Olympics since the Seoul Games of 1988. Since then Table Tennis has distinguished itself in the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, and Athens in 2004, with ever increasing worldwide television viewing audiences. Table Tennis ranked number 5 in all sports at the Athens Olympic Games!

In that time China has been by far the most dominant country winning 20 of the possible 24 Gold medals on offer.

They missed out on the first Mens singles and Womens Doubles Gold medals but since then have have only missed two Gold medals. Surprisingly they have both been in the Mens singles. One was one by the great Jan Ove Waldner of Sweden in Barcelona in 1992 and the other was won by Ryu Seung Min in Athens in 2004.

Despite this, I wonder if the all powerful Chinese team would be pleased about only winning half of the Mens singles golds on offer. I think most other countries would be please with just picking up the scraps that China leave behind.
