One Step Footwork

Footwork - What is it?

So what is footwork?
Basically it is just getting yourself into position to make an effective stroke.

There are all types of names for footwork. Shuffling or Side to Side, Crossover or One Step. Whatever way you get there it needs to be efficient and get you into a balanced position to play the stroke.

One Step

Today we will examine the One Step footwork.
This is done when you are short of time. You start in a balanced position. To move to the left all you do is move your left foot out so you are in a wider stance. Try to remain balanced in this position. Here you can make a reasonable stroke as you are in a balanced position but your feet are further apart than you would probably like them.

Limitation

The big drawback with this footwork is that if the ball moves to the left next time you are in all sorts of trouble as you are already stretched out. Try to get back into your original position as soon as you make the first stroke.

This is a particularly effective way of getting to a ball that is played very fast to you, where you haven’t got time to move both feet into position.

Leading Women

If you watch some of the leading female world players you will notice they use this one step footwork quite a lot. This is because they tend to stay close to the table and play fast strokes. This one step footwork becomes effective in this situation because of the lack of time you have. It isn’t used as much with the leading men.

We will be covering footwork extensively in a later DVD we are planning. For now we only have time to give players this information through our Blogs.
