Samsonov – The Silent Achiever
When you think of the current superstars in world Table Tennis, you think of Wang Hao, Wang Liqin, Ma Lin, the list goes on. But one man that rarely gets the praise he deserves is Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, the nice guy of Table Tennis.
Consistent Performer
Since 2001, at least, he has not been outside the top 8 in the World and currently has squeezed his way up to number 5 again ahead of Wang Liqin. While always being close he has never really cracked it for a big World title, coming close when losing the 1997 World singles final to Waldner. He has however won 2 World Cups in 1999 and 2001 and a Pro Tour Grand Final win. On the European circuit however his record is spectacular. He has won 3 European singles titles and 4 European Top 12 events the first of both of these in 1998, 10 long years ago. He has certainly stood the test of time. These tournaments are tough with the winners earning their titles.
What of the Future?
Now at 32 years of age you would think that his time has passed to win one of the big titles, the World or Olympic singles titles. Who knows he may one more surprise in store for us. Will 2009 be his year? Maybe Yokohama may bring him that big title he has searched for. He is not past beating anyone in the world. Just to put it together in the one championships to achieve the ultimate prize, will be the test he will put himself to once more.
Who will win this years World Men’s singles title?

Yeah, I always think of the Chinese stars when I think of world champions.
Samsonov really does deserve to be thought of because he is a fantastic player.
He was unlucky not to win any major titles
