Racket Sizes in Table Tennis

What are the rules regarding the size of your racket?

The ITTF rule states:

2.04.01 The racket may be of any size, shape or weight but the blade shall be flat and rigid.

So we can use any size racket. So why don’t they use an enormous bat? The answer is simple, it would not help. If you have ever tried to wield a large piece of wood around you will know that it is not that easy to manage. The weight makes it difficult to control. With the speed of the table tennis ball it is almost impossible to be able to move a large piece of wood fast enough to make it effective.

Obviously, using a smaller bat has its disadvantages because of the size of the hitting area. That is why over time Table Tennis rackets have been developed at the size they are. There are small variations of course, but the general size is the one that provides both maneuverability and enough hitting surface.
