Sexing Up Table Tennis

The officials of Table Tennis are encouraging women to wear skirts rather than shorts in an effort to sex up the sport of Table Tennis.

Steve Dainton who I lived with in 1998 is now the director of the ITTF Asia Office. He commented on the overall changes occuring in Table Tennis and said: “Although the skirts are just a small part of the changes, they may spark a revolution by changing the image of Talbe Tennis”.

I think that bringing fashion into Table Tennis can only be a positive for the sport, but I still believe there needs to be freedom for female players to choose whether they prefer to wear a skirt or shorts. I hope that the ITTF won’t take things too far and suggest that players must wear the same sort of clothing that is required in Beach Volleyball.

    The article had already expired so I didn’t have a chance to read it, but I generally agree that the sport’s image could do with a bit of a face-lift. This seems to be the direction that Killer Spin in the States is going with their emphasis on certain female players and Killerspin apparel. I have to admit, however, I shudder at the thought of seeing guys wearing lycra! Hopefully a little bit of common sense (and taste) will prevail.

    If we had female table-tennis players that looked like Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic,then maybe we can justify encouraging our females to wear skirts….

    That shoudnt b the step. A game always looks decnt when a there is coperation between the players and the host. Means that the player must have the full authority of choosing his or her clothes if v want a best game. obviously the player will know the best which clothing suits him or her…
