It was fascinating to watch table tennis at the Olympics. Indicative of the sport’s low profile in Australia, this was actually the first time I had seen table tennis broadcast on TV!

Personally, I found the level of the commentating fairly poor - shedding little light on the complexities of the unfolding action. However, the biggest source of annoyance for me were the replays.

Between points, there is a limited time for replays to be shown. Instead of using this time to show absolutely fascinating slow-mo replays from the standard camera angle (especially those all-too-rare super-zoomed-in replays where you can see every detail of a stroke down to the spinning trademark on the ball), the bulk of the replays consisted of that ugly top-down view. This view conveyed nothing of the spin and sheer energy of the points, and instead transformed an exciting and dynamic sport into a glorified game of Pong.

If table tennis wants a wider audience, they need to do a better job of broadcasting it.
