Choosing Your Table Tennis Shoes
Posted by Jeff Plumb on March 17th, 2008
If you are serious about your Table Tennis, then you need a good table tennis shoe. Now the beauty about a good pair of Table Tennis shoes is that they don’t have to be expensive. You need to look for the following characteristics in a Table Tennis shoe:
- Grippy – The base of the shoe must have a really good grip. The last thing you need when playing Table Tennis is to be falling over because of slippery shoes
- A hard sole – The sole of the shoe should be hard and fairly flat. This allows you to move from side to side easily. With a thick spongy sole this movement becomes more difficult and you may even end up tripping over
Once you learn about the correct footwork for Table Tennis and you start performing training routines that require a lot of movement, the shoe you wear can make a real difference. Running shoes in particular are designed for forward movement and are therefore not suitable. In Table Tennis there is a lot of sideways movement.
When I was a junior, one of my early coaches stressed the importance of getting proper Table Tennis shoes. And he also pointed out that you don’t need to spend a fortune. In fact he recommended Dunlop Volleys if that was all we could afford. So if you have been playing Table Tennis in your runners, then go out and buy a good (not necessarily expensive) pair of Table Tennis shoes with the characteristics above and you’ll never go back.

wow nice blog, interesting about the shoes. in comps i use nomral tt shoes, but in training i just use running shoes, and the differences are pretty evident. my side to side movement is much better with the flat soles.
about your blogs and training videos in general, it’d be nice if u guys invested in an inexpensive external microphone for ur videos, cameras without mics usually have that echoey sound in a hall.
otherwise, awesome site guys, keep tt true to its name! AWESOMENESS!
